When I was researching for this, I looked through the diaries of Mackenzie King to see if he had any reaction to what occurred with the SS St. Louis. I searched in all of the entries for June 1939 and this was the only one where he even mentions Jews. Reading this journal entry, it has absolutely nothing to do with the St. Louis. He makes a remark about the "stereotypical" Jew that he and his mother met in a dream, and then continues on to talk about Hitler and how he has come to know his good side. One would think that after an incident that got so much attention world wide would spark some reaction from the Prime Minister who had rejected the refugees from his country. However, this entry shows no concern, regret, remorse, or even thought about the ship. It represents the idea that the Jewish refugee issue simply was not an issue in Mackenzie King's mind. If the leader of the country is not concerned with this issue, who else would be?
